As someone who loves a good massage and is a fan of CBD oil (Cannbidiol oil), I was excited to formulate my own CBD oil massage-candle. Not only does it provide a soothing scent, but it also has the added benefits of CBD for relaxation and pain relief.

When lit, the candle softens into a warm oil that can be used for massage. The heat from the oil also helps to relax muscles and release tension.

Now, let’s get into the tutorial. Candle making is quite easy when you have the right materials. I will guide you through the process of making your own CBD-candle step by step. What Is CBD?

As someone who has been making CBD candles for a while, I can tell you that there are a few essential components that you need to consider. In this section, I will discuss the most important aspects of making a high-quality product.

Choosing the Right Wax

The first thing you need to consider when making a CBD candle is the type of wax you want to use. There are several types of wax available that I see formulations for, including soy-wax, beeswax, and paraffin wax.

Beeswax is a natural option, but it burns VERY hot and is not safe to pour on the skin while heated as it will burn you.

Paraffin wax also burns hot, and it is used in many nail bars and salons. I never use paraffin-based ingredients in any of my formulations because I find the texture unpleasant, it blocks the skin and stops it from its function of eliminating toxins, and it gives off a black smoke when burned. It is the cheapest option, which is why you will find it so commonly used. Over time, I find it also dries your skin. Think how many times you see people applying paraffin based lip balm over and again, because it is actually causing the lips to become drier.

Soy-wax is a great option because it is natural, renewable, and burns cleanly. However, not all soy-waxes are the same. The only one I will use is a specific type that is designed to be safely used in cosmetic products. This wax melts at a much cooler temperature and is safe to use on the skin.

Make Your Own Quality CBD-Oil

The quality of the Cannabidiol you use in your candle is also important. You can purchase pre-made Cannabidiol oil, but making your own allows you to control the quality and potency. That formulation also uses 7g of cannabis bud, but the finished product is a salve for specific areas of your body like knees or elbows. When it comes to wicks, you want to choose one that is appropriate for the size of your candle. If it is too small, it will not burn properly, while one that is too large will burn too quickly. You should also consider the material used to make it. Cotton is a popular choice because it is natural and burns cleanly.

The container you choose for your candle is also important. You want to choose a container that is heat-resistant and safe for use with candles. Glass jars are a popular choice because they are easy to find and come in a variety of sizes and shapes.

Making your own Cannabidiol oil candle is a fun and easy process that allows you to create a personalised candle recipe that fits your preferences. Here’s how to make your own CBD candle at home:

CBD Massage-Candle Preparation

2g Dried Cannabis Buds (Check the price (*paid link)

100g Rice Bran Oil to infuse the buds in (Check the price on Amazon (*paid link)

Follow the instructions on the linked blog. Using this ratio, you know you will have a 2% infusion strength. The remaining infused oil can be used to make more candles or simply applied directly to your skin. Rice Bran Oil has a wonderful skin feel!

Setting the Wick

The candle wicks I recommend already have a small metal retainer at one end. The wick will be firm because it has already been wax dipped for you, way too long, but don’t cut it off just yet. Use a sticker or a dab of glue to place the retainer in the centre of the glass votive jar. Make sure the wick is centred and straight. An easy way to do this is to use two chopsticks or pencils with rubber bands at each end. Separate them slightly and put the wick securely in between.

You can also use a clothes peg which often has a hole in the centre that you can feed the wick through, and then balance the clothes peg on top of the votive glass jar.

Preparing the Wax and Oil Mixture

First, gather all the necessary ingredients and equipment. You will need soy-wax flakes, a wick, a glass jar or container, essential oils, and a Cannabidiol oil. You can use any essential oil of your choice, but Lavender, Petitgrain, and Frankincense are popular choices for a relaxing massage.

  • Heat the Soy-Wax flakes and Mango Butter in a double boiler.
  • Once the Soy-Wax has melted, remove it from the heat.
  • Add the cannabis-infused Rice Bran Oil (this will drop the temperature, but still be fluid enough to pour).
  • Add the essential oil, or oil blend that you are going to use.
  • Stir thoroughly. If the mixture has started to cool too quickly, flash it back in the hot water to loosen it up. Pour the melted wax, oil and butter mix when it is going opaque, and is runny like a custard.

Pouring and Cooling

Once the liquid wax mixture has cooled to around 120°F (48°C), carefully pour it into the glass jar or container. Fill the container up to about 1/2 inch from the top to leave room for the candle to expand as it cools.

Let the candle cool and harden for at least 24 hours before using it. Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before lighting the candle.

Benefits of the Ingredients

Rice Bran Oil

You need an oil that can tolerate the temperature needed to infuse the decarbed weed. Many oils like Rosehip Seed Oil and Hemp Oil are damaged by the heat needed to get a good infusion. They are best used in other types of products. Some people like Coconut Oil and that is also fine to use, but I find it a little too greasy for massage. This CBD candle uses Rice Bran Oil. It’s perfect for anyone who may have a nut allergy, and it also has a really high heat tolerance.

What is more important, though, is how it feels on the skin and the benefits it brings to your skin. Rice Bran Oil is a rich source of Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Tocotrienols (a superior form of antioxidant), Lauric Acid, and other essential fatty acids. It is also a natural antioxidant that can help protect skin from free radical damage. What’s more, it is great for cooking with and you can use the remaining infused oil for edibles or dressings.

Mango Butter

Mango Butter adds some firmness and texture to the candle, but a significant thing to note is that it melts at skin temperature. Don’t forget, you will be pouring the heated oil onto your skin. Everything needs to be suitable to become liquid at a low temperature so that you do not burn yourself. Mango butter is a natural moisturiser that has many skin benefits. It’s rich in fatty acids which are essential for healthy skin, hair, and nails.

Mango butter can be used to soften dry skin, reduce inflammation, and promote elasticity in your skin. It has the amazing ability to even out skin tones. If you have darker knees than the rest of your legs, for example, regular use of Mango Butter will balance out the difference in skin tone.

Soy Wax

Many waxes can block the skin, but the Soy-Wax I recommend is formulated specifically for use in skincare products. It does not block the pores or cause breakouts, and it helps to lock moisture in. It also has a much lower melting point than other candle waxes or beeswax, so this candle will not burn your skin. The massage-candle is superb to use after a shower when your skin is well hydrated.

Essential Oil

Be sure not to use fragrance oils, as they are often risky to use on the skin. When choosing your oil, give some thought to how and when you will use the CBD candle. If you think you will use it on your hands just before you go to sleep at night, Peppermint oil would not be a good choice as it would keep you awake with your hands being so close to your nose. Ylang Ylang might be too strong and give you a headache.

A good, safe all-rounder is Petitgrain, distilled from the leaves and twigs of the orange tree. It’s calming, with a very soft, gentle fragrance that is wonderfully light and relaxing. Another way to choose your oil is by the terpene content. Just the same as your cannabis is rich in terpenes, so are essential oils.

You can select the oil by its terpene profile. For example, Linalool is a terpene that is very effective in alleviating stress. It reduces the stress response and because it has a sedative effect, it improves your sleep. Linalool is quite commonly found in many strains of weed, but in essential oils, it is found in Frankincense, so that is the one I will be using. Using Your CBD Oil Massage-Candle Safely

Lighting the Candle

Tilt the container slightly to one side. Use a lighter or match to light the candle, and then hold it for a few seconds until the flame catches. Once the candle is lit, place it on a heat-resistant surface, away from anything that could catch fire.

Applying the Melted Oil

Once the candle has been lit, allow it to burn for a few minutes until a small pool of liquid oil has formed. Blow out the flame, and wait for the oil to cool for a few seconds before using it on your skin. If someone is massaging you, they can leave the candle burning so you can enjoy the aroma of the essential oils.

Tip the container slightly, and pour the heated oil into the palm of your hand. The first time you do this, it will be a leap of faith, but trust me. It will not be so hot that it will burn you, but it will be warm, and will feel incredible on your skin.

This is a wonderful foot treat before bed: apply the warm oil, rub it on and then put a pair of socks on. Rub your hand together to work in the last of what you had. You will be amazed at how wonderful it feels, and how soft your hands and feet will be the next day.

  • Do not leave the candle unattended while it’s burning
  • Be careful when  touching the container while the candle is burning or immediately after it has been extinguished
