Botanical Name of Fragonia™ Essential Oil
The botanical naming is a bit of a faff. Fragonia™ is the trademarked name for essential oil and hydrosol produced from a selected chemotype of Taxandria fragrans, a member of the Myrtaceae family. The plant was originally described as Agonis fragrans, which is why both names still turn up in aromatherapy books and supplier information. The Paperbark Co lists both names, while Kew Science currently accepts Taxandria fragrans and treats Agonis fragrans as a synonym. The INCI name used for cosmetics is Agonis Fragrans Leaf/Branch Oil, which you can check in the CosIng database.
Aromatic Profile and Shelf Life
Agonis Fragrans essential oil (Fragonia™ oil), is made by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs of the small tree. This light yellow oil smells really fresh and has a bit of a spicy kick to it. You might notice fruity floral scents, a bit of citrus, and a hint of cinnamon and balsamic notes. This oil is very stable. As long as you store it correctly, in a dark bottle away from heat, it will easily last for 2 years or more. Every bottle will have a BBE (best before end) date on the label anyway.

The Background Story of Agonis Fragrans
Fragonia™ is extracted from a small, shrubby tree belonging to the Myrtaceae family, aka Taxandria Fragrans. The plant is native to South Western Australia and typically grows up to 3 metres tall. Initially, the long leaves and twigs were only used as filler stems by florists for bulking out flower displays.
In 1996, John and Peta Day, a farming couple, discovered a fragrant chemotype of a plant and began cultivating it. They conducted extensive testing and by 2001, they were growing small plantations of it. The Paperbark Co recognised the potential of the natural oil from the plant and decided to trademark the name Fragonia™.
Fragonia™ Essential Oil was the first essential oil to be trademarked, guaranteeing its authenticity from the Paperbark Co. Customers also learn the names of the couple who grew it, which is really neat!
The couple lost most of their plants during the Australian bushfires a few years ago. However, the root tubers of the shrub are quite bulbous and starchy, and many of them survived the fires. They are back in business now, which is why Fragonia™ is slightly more expensive than other essential oils.
Quality products are more expensive but worth it due to their amazing benefits and the guarantee of no adulteration. Other farmers have tried planting the shrub in different places, but it just hasn’t really taken off anywhere else. It seems like it only feels at home in its original spot.
Essential Oil Chemistry
Aromatherapy oils contain various chemical compounds, but we can simplify them to help aromatherapists select the most important ones.
Terpene Profile

The chart displays average data, which may change with each harvest. It’s pretty clear that the three main groups of compounds are almost equal in size, with each one making up about a third of the whole. This is unknown in other essential oils, where it is usually one group of compounds that is massively dominant. This makes Fragonia™ a very well-balanced oil. In fact, Pénoël refers to this nearly perfect ratio as “the golden triangle”.
These are the three main groups of compounds.
Oxides – 1,8-Cineole. Oxides are good decongestants and good at shifting mucous. They are respiratory stimulants and are mentally stimulating.
Monoterpenes – Alpha-Pinene, Limonene, Beta-Pinene, Myrcene, Para Cymene and Gamma Terpinene. These are part of the larger terpenes family and make up a large part of an essential oil. They easily penetrate the skin (when diluted) and are typically fragrant, analgesic, antibacterial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, decongestant, rubefacient, and stimulating.
Monoterpenols – Linalool, Terpinen-4-ol, Alpha Terpineol, Myrtenol and Geraniol. These are generally antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic and antiviral. On the whole, this group is considered to be uplifting and generally very desirable in skincare products.

Benefits and Uses of Fragonia™ Essential Oil
Fragonia™ is steam distilled and highly concentrated, so I dilute it before using it on the skin. It works beautifully in massage blends, creams and personal inhalers, and its softer aroma makes it much more pleasant to work with than Tea Tree for many people.
A laboratory study of five Fragonia™ oils found antimicrobial activity against a range of bacteria and yeasts. The same in vitro research also examined its effect on inflammatory signalling, although that part of the evidence is still at an early stage.
That makes Fragonia™ far more than a pleasant-smelling alternative to Tea Tree, but I would not describe it simply as a stronger version of the same oil. Its balanced mixture of monoterpenes, 1,8-cineole and monoterpenols gives it a character and range of uses all its own.
Alongside those physical properties, Fragonia™ has an emotional and spiritual side that I find every bit as compelling. I will explore that later in the article, but it is part of the reason this oil has become so important in my own work.
Benefits and Uses For Skin
Fragonia™ is one of the gentler essential oils I use, but gentle does not mean it sits there doing nothing. It brings a great deal to skincare without the sharp, medicinal smell that puts some people off Tea Tree. I still dilute it properly, choosing the amount to suit the person and what I am making.
Anti-inflammatory: Laboratory research found that Fragonia™ influenced several of the chemical messengers involved in inflammation. That helps explain why I like it when skin feels red, uncomfortable or generally cross. We cannot turn that into a promise that it treats psoriasis or eczema, but it certainly is not just wishful thinking either.
Antibacterial: The same research found that Fragonia™ oils stopped or killed many of the bacteria and yeasts tested. That makes it particularly interesting for spot-prone skin, foot care, deodorising products and anywhere you want something fresh and cleansing.
Antifungal: Fragonia™ has also shown antifungal activity in laboratory testing. This is one reason I like adding it to foot creams and gels, especially when fungal problems have a habit of cropping up.
Analgesic: This is where practical aromatherapy experience matters. Fragonia™ has built a strong reputation for easing tired muscles and uncomfortable joints, including arthritic aches. The effect probably comes from several constituents working together rather than one particular terpene taking all the credit.
It blends beautifully with Plai, Eucalyptus Globulus, Black Spruce and Black Pepper. Rosemary Verbenone or Cajeput can give it an extra lift in a lotion or gel used before or after exercise. My own favourite is using Fragonia™ in foot creams where, in my experience, it melts away the aches and pains of a long day on your feet.
Benefits and Uses for Hair
Fragonia™ is more useful for the scalp and its beautifully fresh aroma than for changing the hair itself. That does not make it unimportant in haircare. It simply means using it for the job it does best.
Scalp Care: Once formulated correctly, Fragonia™ can be a lovely choice when the scalp feels itchy, flaky or uncomfortable.
Scalp Mists and Toners: Fragonia™ needs a suitable solubiliser so that it stays evenly dispersed in the water. The complete product also needs a proper preservative. I never simply shake essential oil into water and hope for the best.
Shampoos and Conditioners: Fragonia™ brings a clean, uplifting fragrance to shampoos and conditioners. I add it as part of the formula at the appropriate stage rather than dropping it casually into a finished bottle.
Hair Shaft and Growth: I have found no convincing evidence that Fragonia™ repairs the hair shaft or makes hair grow. Its real contribution is to scalp care and the pleasure of using the finished product.
Other Benefits and Uses
Respiratory Support: Fragonia™ contains plenty of 1,8-cineole, the same constituent that gives Eucalyptus and Niaouli their fresh, clearing character. Research into 1,8-cineole describes its mucolytic and anti-inflammatory actions. In ordinary language, that means it can help shift stubborn mucus and make breathing feel easier. I like using Fragonia™ in personal inhalers, diffusers and properly formulated chest balms.
Coughs and Congestion: Fragonia™ has a clean, opening aroma that feels wonderful when your head and chest are bunged up. A drop on a handkerchief or in a personal inhaler is an easy way to use it during the day. You can also blend it into a diluted chest rub. It will not cure a chest infection, but it can make you feel much more comfortable while your body gets on with recovering.
Use with Children: Experienced aromatherapists do use Fragonia™ with children, but in much smaller amounts chosen for the child’s age. That does not mean taking an adult blend and using a bit less. Children need a properly considered dilution and method of use.
Immune Support: This is one of those areas where practising aromatherapists are slightly ahead of the research. Some apply diluted Fragonia™ around the main lymph areas when someone feels run down or completely depleted, and they report good results. Laboratory work shows that Fragonia™ can influence immune signalling, which makes those observations genuinely interesting and well worth studying further.
Improved Sleep: A good night’s sleep is a great healer, and Fragonia™ is one of my favourite oils for bedtime blends. In a small hospice evaluation, 17 out of 20 people reported better sleep after applying a base cream containing Fragonia™ to their wrists before bed for seven nights. Some also reported less tension, anxiety and pain. It was a small real world evaluation, but the results are encouraging and fit very well with my own experience of using Fragonia™ at bedtime.
Top Tip: For bedtime, I like a blend of 1 drop of Fragonia™, 1 drop of Blood Orange and 1 drop of Roman Chamomile. Add the blend to your diffuser before bed. It is a beautifully soft and comforting combination.
Is Fragonia™ Suitable for Use in Perfumery?
Fragonia™ works beautifully in natural perfumery because its fresh, slightly floral and woody aroma sits comfortably alongside Bergamot, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Palmarosa and Rose Otto. It can soften a blend without disappearing into it, which makes it useful in perfumes as well as scented skincare. You can also try it when creating your own essential oil perfume blends. When I created a spa range for a luxury brand, I blended equal parts Fragonia™ and Frangipani. It made the whole range smell wonderfully luxurious and helped justify the price!
Anecdotal Usage
I haven’t found published research for the uses in this next section, so I’m sharing them as practitioner experience rather than proven effects. That does not make the experience worthless. Some of it comes from well respected aromatherapists, and some from my own work and personal use. Fragonia™ is still a relatively small specialist oil, and proper independent research costs money, so it may take time for science to catch up with what therapists are seeing in practice.
- Some aromatherapists use Fragonia™ in abdominal treatments for digestive problems, including candida. That caught my attention because laboratory testing has shown antifungal activity. When I worked as a Colonic Hydrotherapist, I saw just how stubborn gut candida could be and how much some clients struggled with it. I retired before discovering Fragonia™, which is a shame because I would definitely have tried this approach. Practitioner experience is not the same as clinical research, but it is often where good research begins.
For an abdominal compress, dilute Fragonia™ in a carrier oil and apply it to a cotton cloth. Place it over the abdomen, put a warm hot water bottle on top and relax for about twenty minutes. The warmth and aroma make this a deeply comforting treatment, and I would love to see this particular use properly researched. - I have also heard through the therapy grapevine of aromatherapists using Fragonia™ in women’s health treatments, particularly for breast tenderness and menstrual pain. Some say their clients have noticed a real reduction in discomfort. With its reputation for helping with pain and spasm, that makes sense to me. I would love to see somebody investigate this properly, because there may be something genuinely useful here.
- I’ve also heard of people using Fragonia™ for mild depression and long term fatigue. After I had COVID for the first time, I was left with fatigue that dragged on for months. I used Fragonia™ during that time and honestly felt it helped me. I am not pretending that one person’s experience is research, but it was real enough for me to take notice. If any researchers or universities are reading this and looking for their next project, you’re very welcome!
- I’ve also heard regular travellers say Fragonia™ helps them cope with jet lag, especially when they are struggling to switch off at the right time. I can see it being useful for night workers and anyone whose shifts keep changing, because its calming aroma can help create that bedtime signal even when the body clock does not know whether it is coming or going.
Using Fragonia™ in a Diffuser
Fragonia™ is lovely in a diffuser, especially when a room feels stale or somebody is feeling under the weather. I prefer using it in short bursts rather than leaving the diffuser running for hours. Twenty to thirty minutes is usually plenty to freshen the atmosphere and enjoy the aroma, then I switch it off and give the room a break.
A timer makes short bursts of diffusion easy. Before bed, I like blending Fragonia™ with Roman Chamomile because the aroma is soft, gentle and very relaxing. The diffuser shown below is the one I use. It is powered by USB, I can put it wherever I need it, and the timer means I do not have to keep watching the clock. It is nothing fancy, but it works really well.

What Does Fragonia™ Essential Oil Do Spiritually?
As I said right at the start, it was the lectures from Pénoël that triggered my interest in the oil. Listening to one of his lectures can be equally enlightening and intimidating. I found out about it later from a buddy of mine in New Zealand. He’s a respected homeopath and got picked to take part in the “proving” of the oil.
In homeopathy, a “proving” is where a group of experienced practitioners take a highly diluted preparation without being told what the original substance is. They make notes about any physical, mental or emotional changes they notice, then bring those notes together afterwards to see whether any patterns appear. What caught my attention with Fragonia™ was how many people described very similar emotional responses.
I imagine I lost some of you as soon as I mentioned the term homoeopathy and you bailed out. That’s okay, and that is your choice. I may lose a few more people along the way who think this gets far too “witchy-woo”! If you are still with me, thank you for your open minds.
One homeopath explained it in a way that has always stayed with me. We can all get stuck repeating something we know is not good for us, whether that is overeating, smoking, choosing the wrong partners or returning again and again to old wounds left by abuse, neglect or discrimination. There can be a strange comfort in familiar pain, even when we know it is harming us.
She compared it to playing the same record so often that the needle keeps dropping into the same groove. Her description was that Fragonia™ can help “erase” that groove, so the old record is no longer able to keep playing in quite the same way. It was a metaphor, of course, but it hit me straight between the eyes. I knew I had to try Fragonia™ for myself.
About a week after my own bottle of Fragonia™ arrived, I was teaching a three day class to 16 trainee cosmetologists. At the end of the first day, I asked whether they fancied joining me in a very informal experiment, and all 16 said yes. I told them only that it was an essential oil and gave each person a small jar containing a few drops. I did not tell them its name or anything about its reputation, and I asked them not to try to identify it. I simply wanted them to notice whether anything came up overnight and write it down ready for us to discuss the next day.
The next morning, I asked everyone to hand in their notes before we talked. The old cynic in me did not want anybody changing their story after hearing what somebody else had written. I had a quick look through them and was genuinely amazed. 13 of the 16 had written about strong emotional experiences, while three had noticed nothing in particular. Before we discussed any of it, I checked that everybody was happy to share in the group. They were, and even the three who had no response were curious to hear what the others had experienced.
One woman started by saying she had been sexually abused by an uncle of hers from the age of 7 for 3 years. Now, as a woman in her 40s she had blocked it from her mind mostly. She said that in her dream she could smell his pipe tobacco in the pocket of his tweed jacket as he came up to her and put his arm around her. She said that this did not disturb her because, in her dream, she walked out of the room and went into the kitchen where her aunt was making cakes.
She sat and chatted with her aunt, who she adored. She said she felt warm and loved. She was quite amazed with herself that she could say this in front of the group without crying, but she said she felt calm about it. She said she would like to explore this further.
Another woman had left a well paid job after being bullied by a boss who kept dismissing her as “just a typical woman”. It was his way of belittling her and keeping her in what he thought was her proper place. She eventually left and found a better job with a company that valued her skills.
In her dream, she could smell the floor polish from the old office building and was suddenly back there, looking at her former boss. When she told us about it, she laughed and called him a silly little man who was probably trying to compensate for his own issues. Then she said she actually felt sorry for him. What struck me was how calm and centred she was.
In both stories, the old memory appeared in a dream, but the person responded to it differently. The record was still there, but it was no longer playing in quite the same groove. That is what I mean when I talk about Fragonia™ and the smoothing of the record. In the accounts shared with me, the shift has felt calm rather than frightening, and I find that absolutely fascinating.
Fragonia™ and Cannabis
So, this is a cannabis blog, so where’s the weed? There are plenty of ways to bring cannabis and Fragonia™ together, and this is one of the easiest.
Start with my Cannabis Muscle Rub and swap the Eucalyptus essential oil for Fragonia™. The finished balm is lovely for rubbing into tired shoulders, aching muscles and stiff joints. If you used a Myrcene rich cannabis strain for the infused oil, you are also pairing cannabis Myrcene with the Myrcene naturally found in Fragonia™.

Help with PTSD
I’m stepping a little outside my comfort zone here because I’m not a PTSD specialist, but I do live with both PTSD and Complex PTSD and have been working through them for a long time. Fragonia™ is one of the things I keep in my personal toolbox. I am not presenting it as a cure or a replacement for skilled professional support, but I would be dishonest if I pretended it had not helped me.
Cannabis is in that toolbox too, and I have found it sits very well alongside Fragonia™. Neither does all the work, but both have earned their place for me as part of a much bigger picture.
A lot of my experience with Fragonia™ seems to unfold through dreams. They can feel deeper, more detailed and sometimes surprisingly expansive. For me, that is where old memories and habits can begin to look different, almost as though my mind has found another angle on them.
Fragonia™ has also earned a reputation for bringing emotional calm during difficult periods. The word I keep coming back to is resilience, especially when old trauma or emotional pain is being stirred. It feels gentle rather than forceful. It does not push or bully you, and sometimes that gentleness is exactly what you need. Be kind to yourself.
Vibrational Energy
My training as a clinical aromatherapist brought scientific research and holistic practice together, including herbalism and the esoteric sciences. I have never felt the need to choose one camp and dismiss the other. I draw on the whole lot when I create essential oil blends for balancing and aligning the chakras.
2nd Chakra / Sacral Chakra / Swadhisthana / Lower abdomen
The Sacral Chakra sits in the lower abdomen and is linked with creativity, pleasure, sexuality and the way we move through our emotions. When it feels open and balanced, there can be more ease, enjoyment and emotional flow. For me, Fragonia™ fits here beautifully because of its gentle connection with emotional release and resilience.
- Mantra: “I always honour others, but not before myself”
- Colour: Orange
- Element: Water
- Stone: Tiger’s Eye
4th Chakra / Heart Chakra / Anahata / Centre of chest, above the heart
The Heart Chakra sits in the centre of the chest and acts as a bridge between the more grounded lower chakras and the spiritual upper chakras. It is about our ability to give and receive love, not just from others but from ourselves. When it feels open, empathy and compassion can flow more freely. Fragonia™ belongs here for me because it feels gentle, forgiving and quietly supportive when old emotional pain is ready to move.
- Mantra: “When I love myself, loving others comes easily”
- Colour: Green
- Element: Air
- Stone: Rose Quartz
6th Chakra / Third Eye Chakra / Ajna / Forehead, between the brows and the eyes
The Third Eye Chakra sits between the brows and is linked with intuition, inner vision and the ability to see beyond what is directly in front of us. When it feels open, we may notice patterns more clearly and trust our inner knowing. For me, this is the chakra Fragonia™ connects with most strongly because so much of its emotional work seems to unfold through dreams, symbols and a fresh way of seeing old experiences.
- Mantra: “I am open to exploring what cannot be seen”
- Colour: Dark Blue / Purple
- Element: Light
- Stone: Amethyst
Essential Oil Safety
Fragonia™ has a reputation for being a gentle essential oil, and in my experience it deserves it. That does not mean using it without thought. How I use it depends on what I am dealing with, how much skin is involved and who I am using it on.
- Fragonia™ is one of the gentler essential oils and I will sometimes use a tiny dab neat on something small and specific, such as a spot or boil. That is occasional targeted use, not permission to use it neat over larger areas. For normal skincare, use Fragonia™ at 1% to 2% of the finished product, with higher therapeutic dilutions reserved for targeted, short term use.
- I do not recommend swallowing Fragonia™ as a home remedy. Internal use does exist in specialist practice, but that is a world away from casually adding a few drops to water because somebody on the internet said it was safe. Essential oils can cause serious poisoning when swallowed carelessly, so this is not one for guesswork.
- Let’s be honest, hardly anybody patch tests every essential oil before using it. I don’t. A patch test is still useful if you have reactive skin, a history of allergies, or you are unsure about a new oil or blend. If Fragonia™ causes redness, itching, burning or breathing discomfort, wash it off and stop using it.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, asthma, epilepsy, medication and existing health problems do not all call for the same blanket warning. They call for checking the oil, strength and method of use for the person involved. Keep the bottle away from children and pets, and do not put Fragonia™ in the eyes, ears or on mucous membranes.
Conclusion
Fragonia™ is one of those essential oils that does far more than its quiet reputation suggests. I reach for it in skincare, respiratory blends, sleep support, emotional work and anything a little witchy-woo. Some of its uses are backed by research, while others come from what aromatherapists and the people using it actually notice. I am quite happy to make room for both. I am completely enamoured with this oil, but I suspect you worked that out several thousand words ago.
